Description
Antique bronze and faux ivory Art Deco sculpture with a black marble base, from the 1920s. "Aphrodite" was designed by German sculptor Ferdinand Preiss, one of the foremost representatives of the Art Deco movement. He is known for his naturalistic ivory carvings and bronzes depicting women and children. The bronze is beautifully draped around her and feels smooth and luxurious. You can see the incredible quality of craftsmanship in the details in her face, hands, feet, and even the flowers in her hair (see photos). Full of stunning, graceful lines from every angle. This is really the creation of a master craftsman at the height of his powers. The piece is 21 cm tall including the base and feels heavy in your hand- it weighs about 1lb 10oz. The felt on the bottom has a hole in it (see photos), but this is not normally visible. Unlike many Preiss pieces on Ebay that have damaged hands or fingers, she in great condition! She would be a stunning edition to any collection.
