Description

We dug-up this gorgeous and rare piece in the Brimfield Flea Market, Summer 2024. It's one of the most majestic pieces of sculpture we've held and experienced. From the early 20th Century French Art Deco period, it depicts a sailor, or seaman, as they called them back then—as the title on the side also confirms: "un homm de mer" which means "a seaman"—standing tall and confident, as if he's just finished conquering the sea, holding a twisted rope in hand, with his cape flung over his shoulder. His hair is deco slick and his deep contemplative gaze is as if already back at sea, ready for his next conquest. The terra cotta is in very good condition. These pieces were done in two parts, the head and the body separate, then brought together; hence the element around the neck. It is also signed, though not very legibly, on the front. What we can make out is: Frits Ch..., or something close to that. We thought of Danish Architect & furniture designer Frits Schlegel from that time frame, but the letters don't seem to add up. Also Schlegel did not do sculptures as far as we can find out. Circa: 1920's Location: France Condition: Very good, and consistent with age. Dimensions: 5 1/2" W x 4 1/2" D x 17 3/4" H
